This, as reported by Neil Manthorp from Centurion, is quite some achievement:
There have been only 10 opening partnerships in excess of 300 in 128 years of Test cricket. Yesterday, under gloomy skies at Supersport Park, Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs achieved the feat for the third time in only 29 innings at the top of South Africa’s order.
…..
Gibbs and Smith, who have become close friends since the latter assumed the captaincy just under a year ago, are also the first pair to record three triple centuries for any wicket, surpassing Sir Donald Bradman and Bill Ponsford and, more recently, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, who have done it twice.
Manthorp goes on to suggest that the ‘secret of their success, if there is one, is the way they play for each other, literally and emotionally’. It can’t be that simple.
