Phony Joanie

A very long time ago I used to listen to, and I liked, the music of Joan Baez. In 1965 I even travelled from Oxford to London with my good friend and former tutor, Bob Sutcliffe, to hear her singing at the Royal Festival Hall. And now? Couldn’t say. I haven’t heard her stuff for, literally, decades. All of which is merely by way of introduction to this review in today’s dnoc of a gig Baez did in Liverpool. The review, by Dave Simpson, includes the following gem:

The surprise is that for a veteran rebel, she’s hilarious. One yarn tells of a man she knew with “a cowboy hat and a horse’s arse… and now he’s the President!”

Doesn’t that just crack you up? I’d say it’s worthy of a Steve Bell ‘Draw Another Monkey’ Award. I’d also say, as I’ve said once or twice before here, that the man in question – with the ‘horse’s yuktuba’ (hat tip: Latke Gravas – Taxi) – happens to have been responsible for freeing the Iraqi people from a genocidal tyrant, whereas the singing Joan was part of that great coalition of leftists, liberals and others which opposed this outcome. Such are the complexities of the fallen world in which we live.

This, by Jonathan Steele, is in much the same line of country:

Oh yes, and then there’s the small matter of the weapons of mass destruction on which Saddam increasingly appears to be the man who had truth on his side. When he said he had destroyed them years ago, he, rather than Bush and Blair, was the man not lying. (Emphasis added.)
