The Times today gives the full weight of one of its leaders to the news that Mid Devon District Council is considering dumping the apostrophe. I don’t know for sure who the leader-writer is, though I could hazard a guess. He – if it is indeed he – writes (£):
Beyond the borders of Mid Devon, and in newspapers and other publications that intrude within them, the apostrophe will remain in use.
Quite so – and no backsliding. Let’s hymn the apostrophe’s usefulness; it’s pure in its proper place.
